Recognised as one of Britain's leading exponents of wild food Marcus Harrison runs wild food workshops and courses out of the picturesque town of Lostwithiel in Cornwall. He has given talks on the subject at the Natural History Museum and Eden Project, for the National Trust, Slow Food Cornwall and Port Eliot LitFest among others.

His interest in the subject began more than 30 years ago, and in the mid-1980s Marcus began to collate data on the edible wild. Today he is involved in extensive historical research that is unravelling many of the misconceptions about alternative wild food sources and which brings Marcus into contact with academic gurus like Professor Gordon Hillman with whom he swaps notes from time to time.

From the purely survival food side Marcus' knowledge spans a wide area, from the Iberian to Kamtchatkan Peninsulas, and Mediterranean regions to the Russian Arctic, to the African Continent. Among his current researches is the use of bugs and insects as survival food around the world and indigenous cooking techniques.

On a more down-to-earth front Marcus is working with
a number of food professionals to explore new wild food tastes, textures and flavours and develop new food concepts [see the wasabi-wild garlic ricecakes - Opposite], while he frequently experiments with new wild food ideas. As he always tells folks: 'Don't be fobbed off with nettle soup as nettles are infinitely more versatile.'

Marcus' foraging courses and Wild Food School workshops featured on BBC's Countryfile and there's also an assortment of radio interviews, and newpaper and food magazine articles covering Marcus' work.

Anyone with a keen interest in bushcrafting has probably seen Marcus at the Wilderness Gathering where he has run workshops for several years, and also at the BCUK Moot in South Wales where he met up with legendary survival skills guru Mors Kochansky [Below] and swapped notes on differences between Mors' native Albertan edible wild greens and those of our own country.

Wild berries... Spot the toxic ones?

When starting out foraging for the first time it is important to be safe. As time goes on you'll find that identifying plants becomes easier while knowing how to transform them into something tasty becomes second nature. And you never know, you might just find foraging for your own free food a really enjoyable way to spend your time in the countryside. More details of Wild Food School below...
