The Bluebell Line was the UK's first preserved standard gauge passenger railway, re-opening part of the Lewes to East Grinstead line of the old London Brighton & South Coast Railway in 1960. Since then it has developed into one of the largest tourist attractions in Sussex, yet it still remains true to its objectives of the preservation for posterity of a country branch line, its steam locomotives, coaches and goods stock, signalling systems, stations and operating practices.
Steam trains operate every weekend throughout the year, and daily from May to September, as well as during other school holidays. A full programme of special events, ranging from "Friends of Thomas the Tank Engine" and Santa Specials to the annual Steam Fair and Vintage Vehicle Rally, Summer Steam Gala and "Giants of Steam" is held throughout the year. The Bluebell is also home to the Golden Arrow Pullman dining train, for that ultimate meal out in the splendour of beautifully restored 1920s and 1930s Pullman Cars. |
