SUSSEX - WESTAmong the most impressive places to visit in West Sussex is 17th century Petworth House (north of Chichester), with the geometric form of its West Front set in a deer park. Inside the house Grinling Gibbons had a hand in carving the wooden ornamentation, and there are paintings by Gainsborough and Turner. There are several Roman sites in the county. Set in lovely surroundings there's the remains of a huge villa at Bignor, while the remains of a palace remain at Fishbourne. Nature lovers might want to check out the RSPB Nature Reserve at Pulborough (near Wiggonholt, SSW of Billingshurst). |
